The International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE) was a war crimes tribunal held in Tokyo, Japan, by the Allied Powers from 1946 to 1948 to prosecute Japan’s wartime leaders following the end of World War II. Commonly known as the Tokyo Trial, it convicted 28 defendants, including Tōjō Hideki (東條英機), for crimes against peace (Class A war crimes) and conventional war crimes (Class B war crimes). However, the tribunal has been criticized because many countries that had been colonized by or directly victimized by Japan were largely excluded from the proceedings, and because the geopolitical interests of the Allied Powers, particularly the United States, limited the extent to which Japan’s wartime responsibility was fully addressed. Furthermore, although evidence concerning the Japanese military “Comfort Women” system was submitted, the issue received little meaningful attention during the trial.
