The December 2000 Women’s International War Crimes Tribunal on Japan’s Military Sexual Slavery received little coverage in Japan, making NHK’s planned documentary especially significant. Shortly before it aired in January 2001, however, NHK substantially revised the program after pressure from ruling politicians, including Shinzō Abe. Testimony from Chinese survivors and Japanese veterans, as well as the Tribunal’s finding concerning Emperor Hirohito’s responsibility, was removed, while a lengthy interview with historian Hata Ikuhiko, a critic of the Tribunal, was added. VAWW-NET Japan, one of the Tribunal’s organizers, sued NHK over the changes. The Tokyo High Court ruled in 2007 that the program had been unfairly edited under political pressure, but the Supreme Court overturned that decision in 2008.
