The Los Angeles Riots refer to the racial unrest triggered by the acquittal of white police officers who had brutally beaten Rodney King, an African American man, in Los Angeles on April 29, 1992. The riots caused extensive damage due to looting and arson by Black protesters who targeted Koreatown. The significant material and psychological damage suffered by Koreans, who were not directly involved, was exacerbated by the focus of U.S. judicial authorities and local media on the Korean-Black conflict rather than addressing the underlying issues of American society, such as police violence, economic disparity, and racial discrimination.
